Will You Be My Anarkali

Never let the same man tell you twice that he doesn’t want you.

-Fauzia Shaikh, Will You Be My Anarkali?

©bombayreader

This is a story of first love, toxic love, falling in love with the same person twice, finding true love and above all the strength of a woman to heal and survive.

Nadira is a self-made entrepreneur and the founder of “Mystique Weddings’ whose next project is to plan and produce a destination wedding for the bride to be Heena. With Heena comes Salim who’s determined to rewrite his ‘Anarkali Love Story’ after seven years.

I loved the book❤❤❤

I would say there are various reasons for me to love the book, especially the language and heart-touching. I could relate and feel Nadira, she’s this alpha woman in a headscarf who hides her scars and painful past with her brilliant smile. And then there’s Salim…Oh God I’m having a huge crush on him.

This book is not about the cheeky teen romance, there aren’t any eye-rolling moments but it’s a story of ‘Mature Love’…love at a point in life wherein you madly wanna fall in love, you even find the ‘One’ but you dread to propose or confess coz you have many responsibilities, troubled past and the fear to have a heartbreak.

The author has done a fabulous job of playing with emotions, she will make you laugh, become tense, cry and almost plead to the protagonist to say ‘Yes’.

Yes you will coz I did😝

Eat Up, Clean Up

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.
-Hippocrates

If you are someone who constantly lives under the perception that bland muesli is healthier than spiced thepla (paratha) this book is for you.

“Eat Up, Clean Up” by Manjari Chandra is not a book dictating the fad #diet or #detoxtherapy to lose weight in months/years but rather a book breaking the “new-age healthy food” myth and a wake-up call for those following unhealthy lifestyles that can lead to irreversible health problems.

[ Yep! There are plenty of diseases that we face and suffer today that cause irreversible damage to the body and the least we can do is follow an authentic age-old diet and prevent them or do the same and control them. ]
#bombayreader

For me the major takeaways were the chapter ‘Salty Consequences’, ‘ Lose Those Extra Pounds’ and ‘Spice Up Your Life  The Ayurveda Way’ for I needed this wisdom in my life .

But there’s a lot more…brief chapters talking about PCOS and how a healthy diet can help you survive cancer

Thank you Fingerprint Publishing Books for this amazing book to kick-start a healthy 2021

APOPHIS

That which you search for

Lies hidden in a fistful of earth.

Inside an old wooden begging bowl

Besides a wise soul.

-Apophis:Into The Fold Of Darkness, Raj Anand.

©bombayreader

This is the first book of Kleos Chronicles. A story of five supernatural kids who have to save the earth and humanity from a unfathomable twin-headed asteroid and brutal war; fluctuating between different ages and meridian this book is unputdownable if you are sci-fi, fantasy fan looking for something beyond AI. The story begins in 2022 but goes back and forth with real life events of the past (which makes the book more interesting), other than supernatural powers possessed by the protagonist, there are a lot of puzzles and riddles that keep you hooked towards the end.

And the cliffhanger at the end👏

Although the book is huge and I was reading it in ebook format I enjoyed reading the book because the chapters are short, most chapters open up telling you at what time, month, year, latitude and longitude the particular part is taking place which kind of builds up interest and you don’t feel lost.

I would recommend it to teenagers especially because I felt I would have loved to dive into a series of this kind at that age but if you are sci-fi lover with a mythological dip go ahead.

Thank you Raj Anand for the ebook ,the writing is brilliant.

Gangster On The Run

Karma, he told himself, I’m praying for the blood I’ve spilled. But even as he tried to accept the cards fate had dealt him,  his head felt heavy, as if being poked with a thousand needles, as if on the verge of exploding.

-Puja Changoiwala,’Gangster On The Run’

©bombayreader

This is the story of 90’s Dombivali extortionist and hitmen Rahul Jadhav aka ‘Bhiku’ his advent into the underworld, his arrogance, petty fame, list and methodology of crime, prison life, judicial trials, fight with drugs and alcoholism and eventually winning over addiction through rehabilitation also giving up heinous crime world.

Today, he is a transformed man, an ultra-marathoner and a de-addiction counsellor.

Unlike many biographies of a gangster who took to crime and addiction due to circumstances, this book doesn’t make a heroic defence. Nor does the book slain the Indian police or judicial system. Rather the author has biographed Rahul in the truest sense as a person who finally tears down to guilt and takes up running to make peace with his past by shattering marathon records.

The portrayal of the underworld world, murders and extortion is astonishing. The sacrifice of Rahul’s parents and siblings is really heart-breaking.

Puja Changoiwala is an award-winning journalist; her research and writing is wisely reflected in the book. Thank you Harpercollinsindia and Thereaderstribe for the copy.

Recommended for all those who love to read criminal memoirs, true crime biographies and rehabilitation stories.

INQUILAB

The spirit of dissent is integral to India. You cannot shackle us.

-Mahua Moitra, Lok Sabha Member.

©bombayreader

‘INQUILAB: A Decade of Protest’ is a thoughtfully curated anthology of inspiring lectures and speeches, vivacious open letters addressing the malicious silence and the unjust violent actions of the present Indian government (the timeline running from 2011 to 2020).

There’s a foreword by Swara Bhaskar which is inclusive of her personal opinion over the uneasiness of the society today, the increasing rage and the need for protest. The involvement of the youth in the protest, their intentions, their methods and the continuous silencing of their voices is fairly summarized by Swara with her own inputs.

For me, the major takeaways has been the speech by ‘Ramchandra Guha’ explaining patriotism, speech by ‘Romila Thapar’ defining nationalism through reliable history, lecture by ‘P. Sainath’ talking about the real reason of farmer protest , ‘Mahua Moitra’ speech in the Lok Sabha highlighting growing fascism and mode of conveying dissent, the open letter addressed ‘to PM by 48 Former IAS Officers’ and ‘Majid Maqbool’s open letter describing Kashmiri life under siege.

The protests that have inspired this compilation must have been felt and irritated, every millennial born Indian whatever maybe your ideologies regarding the govt in the past decade and if you are socially active you must have in person or a social media user contributed to a few protests. In a way there’s nothing new in the book nor is a conclusive moral note after every chapter (which I loved, nobody is imposing ideas here) but as you complete reading every chapter, you realise the portions of the speeches and lectures that get edited for media sensationalism and manipulated to create fake news.

Daughter’s Duty

What to do if your man is taking so long that you are worried by the time he comes around with his feelings you will have only two more hairs left for graying.

-Namrata Patro, ‘Daughter’s Duty’.

Anybody facing such a situation?😅☺

An Endearing Short Read.

©bombayreader

The story sounds familiar starting with a noble tone but then there’s an adorable love story that totally drowns you in love plus that beautiful Indian parental love. But towards the end I was completely heart broken.

I’m not a romance freak but it was the resolute spirit of the protagonist I could relate to that made me so engrossed in the story that TBH I couldn’t absorb the end.

Pandemic

The pathogen that can spill over, spread, and cause disease is a dangerous creature to be sure, but it’s actually only halfway on the multistage journey toward pandemicity. The fate of the second other half of its journey is determined by how societies respond.

-Sonia Shah, Pandemic.

©bombayreader

Although the human race has been affected by various epidemics throughout history; the novel virus #covid19 has become a semblance of pandemic in 2020. In Fact each time a pathogen infected and killed its host, it was novel to its era.

But what have we learnt from the previous epidemics? Was covid19 pandemic avoidable? Did the epidemiologist and scientists know about a new pathogen on the horizon???

Notable investigative science journalist Sonia Shah answers all of them in her book ‘Pandemic’ talking about various pandemics, epidemics and endemic diseases that have touched and devastated humans and livestock. The book is divided into 10 chapters talking briefly about the various stages and pathways a microbe has to scale to become a mass murderer, the conditions and the environment that force a microbe living a normal life faraway in nature to enter a human body, the contribution of industrialization and globalization in the spread of a pathogen, the role of society and government in harbouring and silencing the outbreak of a disease and finally tracking the next fatal contagion.

Through cholera pandemic and the vast research and lessons available Shah tries to explain the nature of pathogens and pandemic. Other epidemic and pathogen like SARS, H1N1, MRSA, MERS, NDM-1,H5N1, H3N2V, HIV, H7N9, monkeypox, Ebola, Lyme disease, West Nile Virus are also discussed from their source to their spread.

What I loved about the book is the massive research and journalistic material laid down by the author in the most simplistic language making this book the most interesting pop-science book on this topic. Being a health professional myself who doesn’t often read pop-sci coz we are more dependent on scientific papers and articles; I found it a riveting read and would recommend it to my colleagues. The book is highly recommended by me for all those who love reading this genre and people looking out for research material on this topic.

Thank you Sonia Shah, Harpercollins India and @thereaderstribe for the book. One of my best non-fiction reads of this year.

Here I would like to point that this book was written in 2016 by the author and it’s republished now with a new preface in 2020 when the covid19 pandemic is at its peak. No the book isn’t about coronavirus prediction, No unwanted sensationalism here. It’s a brutally honest well-penned book which makes me wanna read more books by the author.

Lastly Those who are going through or are anxious about “Pandemic Fear”, avoid such books.

True Love Stories: Sahir Ludhiavani and Amrita Pritam

Changa hoya je tun paraayi ho gayion,

Muk gayi chinta tainu apnaan di.

-Amrita Pritam

©bombayreader

This is not really a book, it’s more like an article written by Kiran Manral about the aching, passionate, heart-breaking, and unfulfilled love story of Sahir Ludhiavani and Amrita Ji. I don’t know why I read it although I’m someone who wouldn’t pick up a book when the title boldly reads ‘True Love Stories’ maybe it was simply because of Amrita Pritam and like always there’s something important to learn here for women.

As the author describes it perfectly Amrita was an iconoclastic woman and her compromising marriage, unrequited love and her eternal companionship tells you a lot about the type of love one falls for. This story talks more about Sahir for whom Amrita wrote her most celebrated poem “Sunehadey” for which she won Sahitya Akademi Award, “Cigarette” and many more but the love she received for these poems never gave her any pleasure coz she wrote it for the one who wouldn’t read and openly respond to it ever.

A man who proposed to run away with her to China but never proposed love to her, wasn’t ready to be the reason for her to get out of her loveless marriage, the one who wouldn’t commit to any women in his life.

Doesn’t the quality of this man sound familiar to those foolish lovers one falls for wherein the other never wants to publicly hold on to you nor commit to a relationship, they lurk on you when there’s no one around but would not help you out of your problems. How long can one hold on to such a person???

#bombayreader

And the step Amrita Pritam takes makes me love her more. Idk why some sweet souls fall for Sahir and don’t find their Imroz soon in life, some almost destroy their life waiting but then you need to be as brave and sound-minded like Amrita to let go of the one you loved to the lengths of devotion.

(Translation: It’s good that you’ve found someone else now.. for I don’t have to worry about beholding you with myself anymore.)

Murder Milestone

©bombayreader

The frisson of excitement evoked at the thought of being chased and the possibility of being caught, It brings the best out of a murderer.

-Salil Desai, ‘Murder Milestone’.

A serial killer Dr.Solanki convicted for 8 murders is given capital punishment by the state and is about to be executed in a few days wherein he makes a last wish to meet the officer who brought him to this fate. Inspector Saralkar, aware of Solanki’s notoriety, is not happy with the prospect but has to give in due to higher authorities pressure. On their meeting Solanki successfully convinces Saralkar that he did not perform murder of one of his victim and it was done by his protégé that has no mention or hint in the investigations. Although Saralkar is sure catching the person mentored by Solanki wouldn’t stop his hanging but the new clues and revelations festered by Solanki is too strong to let go. Hence the Inspector along with his subordinate jump back and reopen the 16 year old case along with a 3yr old missing person case of one of their own.

As the story proceeds shocking new facts that were overlooked previously come into limelight and more dead bodies are found with similar modish operandi. The killer aka shishya on the other hand is roaming freely making his murderous milestone.

The execution of the story and the introduction of each character is well thought for. None of the plots are dragged or unnecessary scenarios added to disturb your thrill as you walk page by page with the homicide detectives. The lives of Indian policemen and the criminal psychology especially in the cases of homicide and serial killing is briefly yet aptly narrated.

Recommended for all those who love cop or detective stories. Thank you Fingerprint Publishingbooks for the copy

Ten Things Your Skinny Friends Don’t Tell You

If we all were to take part in the slowest eater competition, there is no doubt that the skinniest person in the room would win it.

-Keerthi Yella, ‘Ten Things Your Skinny Friends Don’t Tell You’.

It’s a fact that all of us bless/curse are genes when it comes to health whether that be a toned body or a genetically passed on disease. We all envy those forever skinny people who can eat a whole pie without the pie rounding their waist.

And this book tells you the secret of those skinny people in a clever and friendly voice.

The Q&A at the start of the book makes it clear whom the book is addressed towards, who should buy it and who shouldn’t. There are no diet templates or exercise manuals in the book but trust me read it once as the author talks about some really unaddressed issues that a normal dietitian or your gym instructor won’t tell you either.

Coz only an expert can tell you those things and who’s better than your skinny friends.

Apart from that the book talks about body shaming, false expectations and low confidence which is faced by both the skinny and fat people. I really loved the way the book talks about losing weight and normal body weight without making the reader feel guilty. It also provides you with witty answers to counter the nagging society.

I love the funny tone of the book and the comic illustrations keeping up the whole feel good vibe throughout the book.
